You may remember that Paul Salfen profiled Comrade a few weeks ago. Since then, I've fallen in love with the song "No Need," from new CD There's Many a Slip Twixt the Cup & the Lip. It's so slow and lilting that you expect the drummer to just stop at any moment, but lead singer Jonathan Clark's whispery vocals sure are purty. Download the track at myspace.com/comrade, and see the band play an acoustic set for free at 4 p.m. Saturday at CD World in Addison.
•Experimental pop band Teenage Symphony may be taking a li'l break from playing live, but that doesn't stop them from cracking me up with MySpace bulletins. I saw one yesterday that requests leads on possible employment opportunities for singer J. Louis III. "He's had degrading jobs before, so he's open to any suggestions," it read. Singing telegrams, anyone?
•For more MySpace-related wackiness, head to PPT's page (myspace.com/pptmusic) and listen to the track "How PPT Came to Be." Pikahsso really should think about a second career as a late-night talk show host.
•And I'd be remiss not to let you know that you can add another Web site to your ever-growing list of local music blogs: www.bigdlittled.com. Enjoy.
Dean Strickland is committed to his art. The 39-year-old singer/songwriter doesn't really live in one place, but calls the highways of Texas home as he walks from city to city to chase down gigs. Yeah, we said "walks." He's been on foot with his guitar and catching occasional rides for about a year now. "I thought I needed to get out into the world," Strickland said by phone, on his way to Plano where he'll play Love and War in Texas today at 5 p.m. The former UNT music student's material matches his lifestyle, he says. "It's a mix of country and bluegrass. I don't just do my own songs – there are lots of covers by people like Willie Nelson."
I can't in good conscience tell people to go anywhere but the Hourly Radio/Deathray Davies show tonight, but if you're in Denton you can check out Shiny Around the Edges, Man Factory and others at Rubber Gloves for no cover. You can't beat the Happy Bullets , Doug Burr and George Neal at the Cavern tomorrow. Not to pimp the Cavern two nights in a row, but you don't want to miss Red Monroe and freakin' Faceless Werewolves on Saturday, do ya? And betray Dallas Sunday by seeing Austinite Carrie Rodriguez at the Granada.
