The Sure Shot: We got some love for H-Town

By SKIN

One of our favorite Texas hip-hop hustlers is Matt Sonzala of "Damage Control" radio fame down in Houston. Avid readers of the SS will no doubt remember Mr. Sonzala as one of the first cats to get down on the Gemini Disco Soul Party PodQast.

The Sure Shot

This past week, Sonzala posted the pics of his birthday bash on his essential HoustonSoReal blog. There is a great snap of Money Waters and Mr. Bavu Blakes, whom Sonzala identifies as the best rappers in Texas.

No doubt we agree with our homie's assessment, but it's cool when one of the cats in the thick of that huge Houston rap scene identifies a couple of our favorite locals as such.

So in the spirit of the great Dallas/Houston lovefest, we reciprocate and bring you Houston's indie boom-bap champ The ARE on this week's GDSP. This cat has been knockin' out beats since '91 with his work as a founding member of K-Otix, as well as remixes and production for the likes of Phife, Headkrack and Lone Catalysts.

The ARE is representing 'Space/Bayou/Clutch/Sweat/Syrup City' on this week's edition of the Gemini Disco Soul Party PodQast.

LONE CATALYSTS GO LONE STAR STATE

Those aforementioned Lone Catalysts will have DFW representation next Tuesday as part of the Neva Dug Disco weeklies at Minc. LCs built up a nice buzz in the Midwest with their ties to the strong Cincinnati hip-hop scene. J. Sands, the lead Lone MC, brings that vibe to Dallas as he headlines a bill that also includes SS favorite Chucky Sly and Wordlife.

The Neva Dug crew is always heavy on the culture side of hip-hop, and you'll be able to check out a b-boy showcase and graffiti expo as well. It's free, so you can save a few pennies for your adult beverage of choice.

THE SURE SHOT SEAL OF APPROVAL

The White Rapper Show on VH1 is no doubt the best thing on television right now. The geniuses at Ego Trip took 10 white rappers and stuck them in a house in the Bronx to out-duel each other for a $100K prize. 3rd Bass' MC Serch is the presiding white rapper authority. It's so great on so many levels we don't even know where to begin. Layer after layer of sheer gold. It's the greatest identity crisis role-playing train wreck ever captured on tape.

We'd expect no less from Ego Trip. If you appreciate their extremely savvy, politically incorrect take on American race relations, be sure and check out Ego Trip's Big Book of Racism from a few years back. We like to revisit it while driving. And do not miss a single minute of this show, which airs on Monday nights.

Aiight – we're off to go pitch our 3,000-page treatise on this show to some sort of highbrow textbook publisher.

King of the burbs, baby!
