It's hard to focus on music when Don Nelson's Golden State Warriors are creating fits for any and all Mav-related peeps. But new music keeps rolling in, and the hip-hop don't stop. So you know we're on it like Nellie on scotch.
That can only mean one thing – a "Heavy Rotation" version of the Gemini Disco Soul Party.
You'll hear artists of local interest, like my man Mista Long. His new release Grand Entrance is knocking from top to bottom, so we gave him some burn.
For all the jazz heads, we have Robert Glasper's new Blue Note release In My Element. We've included his jazz mash-up of Radiohead and Herbie Hancock, as well as some of his tribute to hip-hop legend J Dilla – called "J Dillalude." We also have a few overlooked gems from the great Aloe Blacc.
As my homie Benisanna might say, "it's gold-plated golden gold." And it can all be acquired by going right hurr: QuickDFW.com/podqast.
Remember, always be prepared for backcourt pressure after a made free throw. Skin got ejected for telling referee Bennett Salvatore that he looks like Paulie Walnuts. You can console him hurr: skin@quickdfw.com.
HIP-HOP CULTURE AND POLITICS ON CYBERBLAST
Anyone with a little tech savvy and a desire to be heard can get their media on. Whether it's the "everyone's a critic" realm of blogging or the "we're all DJs" mentality of podcasting, there are thousands of options screaming for your attention.
One of the Sure Shot's current favorites is www.360DRadio.com. Host JAM Renaissance and the revolving cast of personalities debate issues from racial and gender politics to the relevance of Amy Winehouse. And when they're not chopping it up, they're spinning some of Dallas' finest and often overlooked artists (my man Al Lyric is in steady rotation).
The vibe is laid back and conversational, and the music selection is top shelf. 360D recently kicked it up a notch with subscriptions available through iTunes. For more info, hit up JAMRenaissance@gmail.com.
The great Bobby Byrd knew you had soul ... "cuz if you didn't you wouldn't be in here." You can let the cool folks over at the Neo Soul Cafe know you got it too by representing at the I Got Soul Music Conference goin' down at Black Forest Theatre and other spots this weekend. Mizz Badu's presence more than solidifies a strong weekend lineup. Don't sleep on performances by PPT or Keite Young.
You can check out the aforementioned Mista Long tonight as Blackwerks Entertainment presents Sounds of the Dirty South at the Palm Beach Club in Deep Ellum. The bill also includes SS faves Young Phil and Money Waters, along with the always affable Big J of the Clever Monkeys. And with KNON's EZ Eddie D on the wheels, you can't lose.
