Memorial Boogie: A big three-day weekend can only mean one thing: Calling in sick on Tuesday. Here are some shows deserving of a slot in your busy party schedule.
The Pajamma Jammy Jam & Lingerie Contest: Nice People presents this Saturday night event at the Green Elephant on Dyer. It boasts the odd mixture of indie-flavored backpacker rap and drunken aspiring stripper. Los Hip-Hop Guys hold down the decks and Mr. Blakes hosts with performances by boom bap champ Rob Vik and perennial underdog Dedicated. Cash prize awarded to the hottest exhibitionist. Good times.
Operation Shutdown – The Official Whut It Dew Party: DJ Rapid Ric has been annihilating the mix-tape game from the Dirty South to the Rotten Apple for a minute now. He brings the whole Whut It Dew fam (Mr. Blakes, Charlie Boy, Magno and Rhyno) to Tomcats on Commerce on Sunday night to showcase that flavor you get on his mix tapes. Blazin'.
Memorial Day Weekend Hip-Hop Show: Final Friday moves its monthly gig to Sunday night this time around and takes advantage of the long weekend with another reliable bill at Gypsy Tea Room. Headliners P.P.T. bring energy and wild showmanship, but don't sleep on one of my current faves – Verbal Seed. Their Afronauts CD is essential listening. This show is just a block away from the Whut It Dew joint, so The Sure Shot recommends you shuffle back and forth.
Notes from the underground: Calling Astronautalis a rapper is sort of like calling Scientology a religion. But we all have our own body thetans to audit, so ignore basic categories and recognize the release of his new CD. The Mighty Ocean and Nine Dark Theaters finds the former Dallas resident and well-respected battle rapper moving closer in sound to Thom Yorke than Lord Finesse. I doubt label Fighting Records even bothers trying to market this to the "rap crowd," whoever that is, but Astronautalis is an artist worth following nonetheless. For a dude with as many disparate influences floating around in his dome as Astro has, his still-evolving sound feels right on time. Available now at www.towerrecords.com.
