Sorta hits roadblock

12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, May 25, 2006

Dallas band Sorta is facing a surprising dilemma: Its long-delayed new CD set to hit stores June 8, Strange and Sad But True, will no longer be released on Summer Break Records.

Lead singer Trey Johnson explains: "We've had to back out of the agreement with our label. We're now two weeks out from the release date of the record and we have, uh, nothing. This has just gone down in the last week."

Summer Break president Robert Jenkins could not be reached for comment yesterday.

All of the tracks from the album have already been previewed on MySpace over the last few months, in sets of four.

"Our thought behind that was that we were getting a lot of hits on MySpace, and Summer Break had pushed the release date back when the record has really been done for six months. ... What it did was it turned a lot of people on to the music," Johnson said.

With the planned release date for Strange and Sad looming, Johnson is looking for a solution: "I am trying to make arrangements with all kinds of people to participate in the release of this record. ... Unfortunately, given the fact that Summer Break had put up all of the money to record the record, I'm having trouble coming to an agreement on terms on how to move forward."

Strange And Sad But True, indeed? "Yeah. It is. It's been really frustrating. It's a great record and we have no way to put it out. We have no record label and no support. I basically have until the end of the week to get this to the manufacturer to make the deadline. So, I'm screwed. I'm applying for a credit card right now."
