Hillary Clinton's advance troops are softening up an invasion spot in Bush country. The word is that former President Bill Clinton will make a fundraising swing through Dallas after Thanksgiving.
This week, Hillary campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe spoke with a group of Hillary supporters at the Dallas home of Gardere attorney Doug Haloftis. Mr. McAuliffe is a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and was a major financial rainmaker for Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
Mr. Haloftis is helping organize the event with Mr. Clinton. Tuesday evening, he and Mr. McAuliffe and a party of eight dined at Al Biernat's.
Iconic musician Jerry Jeff Walker is once again on his feet and writing and playing music. He may have trouble, however, with airport metal detectors.
The entertainer has had several neurosurgeries to deal with a lifelong scoliosis problem that has caused nagging pain during live performances. In August, Austin surgeon Kurt Von Reuden opened him up for something more intricate. He stabilized his lower back with a rod and screws.
On the subject of back surgery, Jerry Jeff says, "If you have patience, you'll lose it; if you don't have it, you'll find it."
His wife and manager, Susan Walker, reports that he most definitely will be playing his holiday show Dec. 14 and 15 at Gruene Hall in the Hill Country. The next Jerry Jeff show will be an appearance with his band at the 1894-vintage Grand Opera House in Galveston.
Then the Walkers will head to their home in Central America for a winter retreat. "We're heading down to Belize at the end of January and the end of February," says Susan. They will serve as hosts for two Camp Belize events for Jerry Jeff's ardent fan base.
One peek at the Will Call list for tickets to Wednesday's Hannah Montana extravaganza in Fort Worth shows that the Disney overlords thank heaven for little girls who insist their parents take them to concerts.
VIPs on the Disney list included Janet Dorsett, wife of football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett and mother of two Dorsett girls; doting dad Troy Aikman; and Stephanie Strangis, wife of Dallas Stars announcer Ralph Strangis.
A Tuesday dinner at the Hilton Anatole was to honor T. Boone Pickens and his wife, Madeleine, for their recent $50 million gift to UT Southwestern Medical Center. But with Southwestern Medical Foundation chairman Paul Bass serving as emcee, there was some good-natured razzing, too.
Two years ago, Boone married the fetching California horse breeder, widow of Gulfstream Aerospace founder Allen Paulson.
"Within a certain circle," said Paul, "they are known as Beauty and the Boone."
The Pickenses received the Charles Cameron Sprague Community Service Award.
Channel 8's retired weather icon Troy Dungan got some zingers from pals Dale Hansen and Tracy Rowlett at a Tuesday "Tribute to Troy" luncheon at the Fairmont, sponsored by the Press Club of Dallas.
To Dale's tease that Troy never got the weather forecast right, Troy responded, "Try predicting the ball scores three or four days in advance and see how well you do."
WFAA news anchor Gloria Campos served as honorary chairperson of the luncheon, which was a benefit for a Press Club journalism scholarship in Troy's name.
