Longtime friends and towering Texas talents Tommy Lee Jones and Bill Witliff are collaborating to bring Ernest Hemingway's posthumously published novel, Islands in the Stream, to the screen.
The Austin-based Mr. Witliff wrote the teleplay for Lonesome Dove, in which Tommy Lee played Woodrow F. Call, and the screenplays for Legends of the Fall and The Perfect Storm. He will adapt the novel, which was first published in 1970, nine years after Papa took his own life in Ketchum, Idaho.
Mr. Witliff is writing the screenplay while Tommy Lee, his friend who lives up the road in San Saba, will direct. It will be his second feature to direct, following 2005's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. In 1995, he also directed the TV movie, The Good Old Boys, using then little-known actors Matt Damon and Frances McDormand.
The $30 million Islands in the Stream project will film in Puerto Rico early next year.
Hannah's pal Jake
Unlike Miley Cyrus, Hannah Montana regular Cody Linley was not showing off his back this month. He was fully clothed in Dallas on Wednesday. The Lewisville-based 18-year-old actor appears on Hannah Montana as TV star Jake Ryan. He is a double-threat actor-musician.
He checked into the Stoneleigh to take some meetings.
Lane change at DMA
As Carol Burnett used to sing, "Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say, 'So long.' " That time is quickly approaching for Dallas Museum of Art director Jack Lane, who is leaving at the end of this month after presiding over a period of unprecedented growth and maturation at the DMA.
On Tuesday night, he'll be feted at a black tie and boots celebration in the museum's Hamon Atrium hosted by DMA board chair Marguerite Hoffman, board president Walter Elcock and events chair Deedie Rose, as well as all the trustees of the museum.
Alan's Last Word
"Anybody can direct, but there are only 11 good writers." Mel Brooks
