2 teens accused of car racing at 95 mph in Arlington

04:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008

From Staff Reports

Two teens accused of racing at speeds of up to 95 mph were arrested Wednesday on charges of felony traffic violations.

Brandon Lee Burchfield

Brandon Lee Burchfield, 18, and David Alvarado, 19, were taken to Arlington jail on $3,000 bonds on charges of racing on a highway.

Officers responded to an accident in the 6400 block of South Cooper Street the afternoon of Feb. 14, Arlington police said.

Mr. Burchfield in a Honda Prelude and Mr. Alvarado in a Nissan 240SX, both heading north, collided with the rear of a cement truck, police said.

The speed limit on the road was 45 mph, but investigators said the two cars had traveled up to 95 mph.

David Alvarado

Mr. Burchfield was not injured. Mr. Alvarado and passengers from both vehicles were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.

Police said they occasionally arrest people caught racing.

“We’ve had racing issues before but it’s usually with motorcycles,” Arlington police Lt. Blake Miller said. “Some racing is competitive and some of it is where people know each other and are out there having contests for speed.”

It’s a felony to race in a motorized vehicle if it ends in bodily injury or death, Lt. Miller said. It’s a Class B Misdemeanor to race and no one is injured.

In a separate case, Mr. Burchfield has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Nogaelda Zavala of Alvarado was killed in a Feb. 22 accident in the 600 block of Debbie Lane, Arlington police said.

Staff writers Emily Tsao and Kimberly Durnan contributed to this report.
