Kaufman County sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement officers rounded up one suspect in a major copper theft after a five-hour manhunt Wednesday morning and arrested his alleged accomplice hours later.
According to Lt. G.W. Huddleston of the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, officers on patrol surprised two men stealing copper around midnight from Trinity Valley Electric's Marshall Sub Station at 1760 Farm Road 741, north of State Highway 175. The two fled on foot.
Officers recovered the suspects' car and later, in a search that included officers in cars and on foot with air support from a Department of Public Safety helicoopter, found Daniel Lairsey, 27, of Quinlan hiding in a muddy, overgrown area not far from the sub station.
The manhunt was called off about 11 a.m., but a few hours later, deputies arrested John Kubat, 34, of Mesquite a few miles away from the substation.
All the stolen copper was recovered.
Mr. Lairsey and Mr. Kubat are being held in the Kaufman County jail. No bail has been set.
Police estimated that the power substation suffered about $10,000 in damage, but service to Trinity Valley customers was not interrupted.
