Police identify suspect in shampoo thefts at Target

02:53 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

By BRYAN SHETTIG / The Dallas Morning News

A man accused of stealing bottles of BioSilk shampoo from a Frisco Target and hiding them in his pants may also be responsible for a similar theft in Lewisville, police said.

3201 Preston Road in Frisco

The most recent incident took place at 3201 Preston Road in Frisco on Aug. 16. Frisco police said the man stole about $300 worth of shampoo in bottle and gift packs.

"It's some pretty high-dollar shampoo," said Frisco police Sgt. Gerald Meadors.

According to Target's Web site, 12-ounce bottles of BioSilk shampoo can cost $10 to $36.

Sgt. Meadors said the suspect was identified through Target security camera but was not in Frisco police custody and his name was not being released.

Police said it was unclear exactly what the suspect was doing with the many bottles of shampoo, but that he could be reselling them.

Target spokesman Michael Krueger said BioSilk and other beauty products are commonly stolen from Target stores to later be sold online for near retail prices. "People can sell it to a worldwide audience and get top dollar for it," he said.

In addition to shampoo, other commonly stolen items include razor blades, oil of Olay and baby formula. Mr. Krueger said Target is still deciding whether to put certain items behind lock and key or a counter. There is also federal legislation being considered to create more transparency on auction Web sites.

"We're trying to cut this kind of thing off at the source," Mr. Krueger said.

The man is suspected of additional thefts at the store and at a Lewisville Target, Frisco police said.

Lewisville officials said two men entered a Super Target at 725 Hebron Parkway on July 7 and took bottles of BioSilk Finish Spray and BioSilk Silk Therapy.

According to a court record, Raymundo Bastillos, a senior member of Target Asset Protection, told police that one of the men accused in the Lewisville theft may be connected to several other Target thefts in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. Mr. Bastillos said the man has struck security guards attempting to stop him.
