Unlike last year when a surprise new influenza strain emerged, this year’s vaccine is a good match and should offer plenty of protection, experts said.
“We want to make sure that people have a heightened awareness starting in October, though flu season usually peaks in January and February,” said Tarrant County Public Health spokeswoman Vanassa Joseph.
Once the shot is administered, it may take up to two weeks to take full effect, Ms. Joseph said.
Denton County is offering vaccinations at two clinics this week. “After this week, we’ll find out how many we have left, and if we have enough, we’ll make the shots available at our offices,” said Betsy Haggard, a spokeswoman for the Denton County Health Department.
The vaccine can also be found at various groceries and pharmacies, including Tom Thumb, Kroger, Albertson's and CVS today. Times, cost and availability vary by location.
“We recommend the shots to everyone, especially people at risk for serious complications from the flu, everyone 6 months to 5 years, pregnant women, those over 50, those with certain chronic medical conditions and those in long-term care facilities,” Ms. Haggard said.
“It is also important that anyone who lives with any of these people also get a shot,” she said.
Dallas County health officials began administering flu shots to adults on Monday. Vaccines for children were expected to be available later this month.
