Interstate 30 reopens
ahead of schedule
The closure of east- and westbound Interstate 30 at Collins Street didn't last all weekend after all.
The interstate was closed at Collins to allow for demolition of the northbound Collins Street bridge. The road was expected to reopen at 8 tonight.
However, the southbound bridge reopened to two-way traffic Saturday morning after the demolition finished ahead of schedule, the Texas Department of Transportation said in a news release.

New animal shelter
manager is named
Kent Robertson, a former Dallas animal services division manager, will become the city's animal shelter manager next month.
Mr. Robertson will begin work in Dallas on Sept. 10, according to a memorandum sent by Forest Turner, interim director of the code compliance department, to the Dallas City Council. He most recently worked in Houston as a Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care chief, resigning from that position last week.
Mr. Robertson's appointment fills a void created when Mr. Turner in May dismissed then-animal shelter manager Willie McDaniel, who has since been reassigned to City Hall's Environmental and Health Services Department.
The animal shelter, which opened late last year, has been plagued by structural problems and accusations that staff members had mistreated animals scheduled for euthanizing.
Mr. Robertson arrives just weeks after the Dallas City Council passed a sweeping and highly contentious animal control ordinance amendment.

Mesquite man stabbed
dead in self-defense
A 23-year-old Mesquite man was stabbed to death early Saturday in Dallas' Uptown area after he approached another man with a box cutter, police said.
Justin Turner and several friends were drunk and causing a disturbance in an alley in the 2500 block of McKinney Avenue near Fairmount Street, police Lt. Vernon Hale said.
Several bouncers from a nearby club went to investigate. Mr. Turner then pulled out a box cutter and cut a bouncer on his left hand, Lt. Hale said. Mr. Turner then made several slashing gestures at another bouncer.
That bouncer pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Mr. Turner once in the chest, Lt. Hale said. Mr. Turner was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he died around 1:20 a.m. Saturday.
The bouncer who stabbed Mr. Turner stayed at the scene. He was detained and released. Investigators said the bouncer appeared to have acted in self-defense. The case will be sent to the Dallas County grand jury, Lt. Hale said.
