The Rev. J. Carl Vogel Jr. was pastor to generations of North Texas Catholics. During his more than half century as a priest, he married couples, baptized their children and buried the dead.
His ministry included nearly 30 years as a Texas National Guard chaplain, service that included active duty during the Cold War showdowns of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile crisis.
Father Vogel, 89, died Wednesday at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas of complications from a June fall.
Visitation will be from 8 to 9 a.m. today and Monday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas. He will be buried in Calvary Hill Cemetery.
Father Vogel was a fun-loving man who always had a smile, said his sister Patricia J. Moran of Dallas.
"He was always kind," she said.
Since her brother's death, Mrs. Moran has heard from many of his former parishioners.
"He married them, he buried their husbands – or their mothers or fathers – baptized all the children, married the children and baptized their children," Mrs. Moran said. "He was a wonderful, wonderful person."
Father Vogel was born in Dallas, the second oldest child of a family with five children. He was educated in parochial schools in Dallas, where he graduated from St. Joseph High School.
He continued his education at Terrill Preparatory and Junior College in Dallas and St. John's Seminary in Little Rock.
Father Vogel was ordained at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dallas on May 27, 1950.
He began his priesthood in Fort Worth, where he was an assistant priest at St. Patrick Cathedral and St. Rita Catholic Church.
He then became assistant priest at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Dallas.
While at St. Cecelia in the mid-1950s, Father Vogel became a chaplain for the 49th Armored Division of the Texas National Guard.
He was called to active duty with the unit in October 1961. The 49th was sent to Fort Polk, La., in preparation for possible service during the Berlin crisis, which was soon followed by the Cuban missile crisis.
Father Vogel served nearly 30 years as a National Guard chaplain and retired as a major. He also served as a chaplain for the Boy Scouts of America.
After leaving St. Cecelia, Father Vogel was pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Denison, Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Garland and Our Lady of Victory in Paris, Texas.
In 1984, he became pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in McKinney, a position he held until he was named pastor emeritus in 2002.
Father Vogel had been an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a longtime abortion opponent and had been honored for his efforts. He received the Cardinal Mindszenty Freedom Award in 1998, the Bishop Charles Grahmann Award for exemplary anti-abortion leadership in 1999 and the Defenders of Life Award from the Texans for Life Coalition in 2002.
Father Vogel is survived by his sister.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church, 411 Paula Road, McKinney, Texas 75069.
