Jaffe invades London
Scads of lucky Brits in Hyde Park will witness the greatness that is Sarah Jaffe (above) today, as the local singer-songwriter takes the stage at London's Wireless Festival. The girl's in pretty good company – Jay-Z, Morrissey, Beck, Hot Chip and the National are among the headliners at the fest – but we have no doubt she'll start a mean word-of-mouth campaign leading up to the August release of her EP, Even Born Again. If you want to hear about Sarah's London adventure, visit her blog, sarahjaffe.blogspot.com. She tells us she'll post updates there. And visit our blog, nightlifeblog.quickdfw.com, to stream a Jaffe tune today and pretend that you're sitting in Hyde Park hearing it live.
DENTON DOES SOME NAVEL-GAZIN'
JASON JANIK/Special Contributor
A handful of Denton musicians are coming together on Saturday night at Dan's SilverLeaf to celebrate the artists and sounds of their town. At an event dubbed Denton Covers Denton, acts Deep Snapper, the Heelers, Brent Best (of the Drams), Starhead and RTB2 (above) will perform songs originally done by other Little D acts. After we prodded RTB2 singer Ryan Thomas Becker this week to give us info about whose material be covered, he mentioned Current Leaves, George Neal, Centro-matic, Baptist Generals and Burnt Sienna. Becker said the folks doing the covers have taken different approaches to preparing for the show: "I've heard people talk about the rehearsals for weeks. Personally, [bandmate] Grady [Sandlin] and I have been crammin' for this like a geometry exam. We just started mapping out the tunes last night."
WELCOME BACK, 'ADVENTURE CLUB'
You're not imagining things. You've recently heard DJ Josh Venable doing the weeknight shift on KDGE-FM (102.1), despite the fact that he was let go by the station late last year. He's now working at another Clear Channel station in Los Angeles. But his absence apparently made KDGE's heart grow fonder; management has enlisted him to do the nighttime gig from afar. And – I'm totally burying the lead here – KDGE has also convinced Venable to bring Sunday night indie-rock show The Adventure Club back to the Dallas airwaves. Starting Sunday, he'll be doing two versions of the show, one for LA and one for us. Its new start time here is 8 p.m., which bumps The Local Show to 11. Says Clear Channel Operations Manager Vince Richards, "Earlier in the year we started looking at what made the Edge the Edge, and Josh's show was one of those things. We're excited to have him back."
PICNIC KICKS IT FOR CONTEST
Former PPT member Picnic has kept pretty busy since leaving the group. Last week he traveled to Houston to compete in a Red Bull-sponsored music contest. He ended up taking third in the competition, which required entrants to spin tracks they'd produced while dancing and hyping up a live crowd. We've got video of his lively performance up on the Nightlife blog. We've also got a link to a streaming track from the new duo project Picnic's working on with rapper Astronautalis. (They plan to call themselves Max Moon.) The song, "Mister Colourful," may turn up on the mix tape Picnic is putting together for the upcoming Kixpo Sneaker & Streetwear Exposition.
TONIGHT: Enjoy the country jams of Eleven Hundred Springs while shopping for overpriced produce at the Fort Worth Central Market. Or you can swoon to the sweet acoustic folk of Texas native Elizabeth Wills at Poor David's Pub.
FRIDAY: These are the local shows that make America great: the super-poppy Happy Bullets at Lee Harvey's, bluegrass-lovin' A.M. Ramblers at Dan's SilverLeaf, and versatile rock band the Slack at Barley House. Oh, and don't forget about the return of recent Quick cover boys American Fuse at Double Wide.
SATURDAY: Jam-friendly rock band Dove Hunter plays through an almost certain hangover at 3 p.m. at Good Records. Green Elephant welcomes the crowd-pleasing, dirty funk of Funk Dirty. Taylor Davis gets all singer-songwriter-y at the Cavern. And Double Wide's got a strong bill including Dallas rockers the Crash That Took Me and Here, In Arms.
SUNDAY: Symphonic pop collective Mount Righteous makes a trip to Fort Worth worthwhile by headlining at 1919 Hemphill, but folks with no gas money can hang back at Lakewood Bar and Grill for a comedy 'n' music open-mic night.
