Bluegrass serenade

12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, July 10, 2008

JASON JANIK/ / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

There's been an abundance of down-home music hitting local listeners' ears lately, from the Theater Fire's surprising new CD to the A.M. Ramblers' old-school bluegrass and Doug Burr's psalm-songs project.

And this weekend we'll see the release of the new album from Denton collective Pinebox Serenade, a seven-piece group that works from a bluegrass formula but also throws marimba, cello and accordion into the mix.

You can sample four songs from new CD Let the River Take Them Home (produced by Drams frontman Brent Best) and also find out how to pre-order the disc at myspace.com/pinebox serenade.

My personal fave at the moment is "The Plains," on which group member Nick Foreman (also of the brilliant Dust Congress) sings lead. If you like what you hear, head to Dan's SilverLeaf in Denton on Saturday night for the big release show.

PUTTING IT OUT THERE

On Monday, we reported that Denton electro-acoustic act Mom was starting a blog. Momquilt.blogspot.com will be your No. 1 source for info about the duo's musical adventures. Never one to be outdone, Dallas pop group Smile Smile announced on Tuesday that it will soon begin a series of video blogs in order to keep fans in the loop. Singer/guitarist Ryan Hamilton wrote, "The plan is to record new video every Wednesday night at our rehearsal space. I'm sure everyone will get to witness the fights and insults during rehearsal, as well as some acoustic performances." Look for the first video later this week at youtube.com/user/smilesmilemusic.COMBO, MEET CLICK AND CLACK

How many times have you been entertained during a road trip by the radio show Car Talk, hosted by Click and Clack? If the answer is "many," you'll be glad to know that the hilarious brothers are the stars of a new PBS animated TV series called As the Wrench Turns. Why am I telling you this? The music for said series was composed by Grammy-winning Denton polka band Brave Combo (above). The group will play Poor David's Pub on Saturday, the night before As The Wrench Turns debuts on Channel 13. Visit poordavidspub.com for more info.

DENTON'S NEXT GREAT COMP

Denton continues to own when it comes to putting out compilations spotlighting local talent. The store Strawberry Fields has already put out a couple of stellar collections, and now it's Gutterth's turn to share. The small record label and promotions company will release Gutterth Compilation One on July 23 during a New Science Projects show at J&Js. The two-disc sampler includes tracks by Emil Rapstine, Glen Farris, Sarah Renfro, Will E. Lee, the Great Tyrant and many more. Best part? It'll be free. Visit gutterth.com for more info.
