The stories behind

local musicians' songs

Band: Dallas pop group Smile Smile

Song: "The Attic," which will appear on Smile Smile's next album (no release date yet).

The inspiration: Members Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme wrote the song around the time Hirunrusme was getting ready to move out of the house where they'd both lived. "It's about looking through old memories," Hamilton says. "Things that have been packed away and forgotten about. Some things you want to see and remember, and some things you'd rather forget."

The result: A melancholy sing-along with verses that list things you'd find in storage: "Old boxes and old clothes/Things left over from last year's Christmas." The randomness of the items ("A Ouija board and some socks" is a favorite line) start to make more sense when the chorus comes along: "There's nothing here to see/Nothing left to say/Come on/Come on/Catch up/It's OK."

In their own words: Hamilton says his collaborations with Hirunrusme don't always go smoothly, but that he wouldn't have it any other way. "We fight and argue, yell and scream, cuss, insult each other, walk away, ignore each other for long periods of time. But in the end, we are always satisfied with the finished product. I don't know how we do it, but it's our way and we make it work."
