Australian swimmer Jason Cull says he survived a mauling by a 16-foot shark over the weekend by wrestling with the beast, finally getting free by poking it in the eye.
M&MS USED IN ASSAULT, POLICE SAY
An Iowa college student whose friend was being questioned in a hit-and-run found himself charged with assaulting an officer with a curious choice of weapons: M&Ms. Sean McGuire was arrested early Sunday at a convenience store after Drake University security guards noticed the officer being pelted by the colored candies, according to a police report. McGuire said he threw the candy because he was "sticking up for his friend," the report states.

300-POUND INMATE UNDERFED?
An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge in Bentonville, Ark., is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu. Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.
POLICE: MAN PUSHED INTO MINE
A man who called 911 after his friend survived a 500-foot fall at a Pennsylvania strip mine was charged yesterday with pushing him over the edge. While Nathan Bowman recovered from broken bones and other injuries in a hospital, Richard George was sent to Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail. Authorities said in court documents that George admitted under questioning that he pushed Bowman into the canyon-shaped mine about 1 a.m. Friday after they got into an argument.

A baby whose carriage was blown by the wind onto railroad tracks and run over by a train survived with little more than a bump, police in Moehlin, Switzerland, said yesterday. "The train went over the child, but luckily it had fallen between the rails," said Officer Bernhard Graser.

Police are searching for a man accused of shoving an electric guitar in his pants and walking out of a store in Lewiston, Maine. Police say the theft of the Fender Stratocaster occurred last week and was caught on tape. Strangely enough, the music shop has seen the method before. A man did the same thing in 2006 but was caught as he tried to walk out.

A burglar who broke into a funeral home near Valencia, Spain, tried to fool police by playing dead, but two things gave him away. First, he breathed. Plus, he wore grungy clothes rather than the Sunday best of those settling in for eternal rest. The suspect's name was not released.

DISHONOR CODE?
University of Texas at San Antonio students wanted to draft an honor code that discouraged cheating and plagiarizing. Unfortunately, it appears they copied another school's code without proper attribution. The student in charge of drafting the code said it was an oversight, but cheating experts say the duplication of Brigham Young University's code illustrates a sloppiness among Internet-era students who don't know how to cite sources properly and think of computers as cut-and-paste machines.

MAN CAN'T STAY OUT OF TROUBLE
A Kansas man whose girlfriend sat on his toilet so long that the seat adhered to her body has been arrested in a separate case. Authorities say Kory McFarren was arrested after being accused of exposing himself. His girlfriend remains hospitalized.
BILINGUAL SENTENCE
A Pennsylvania judge known for creative sentencing has ordered three Spanish-speaking men to learn English or go to jail. The men, who faced prison for criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, can remain on parole if they learn to read and write English, earn their GEDs and get full-time jobs, Luzerne County Judge Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. said.
