Dive bar is worth landing at

Let Thoth float your boat
Photos by JASON JANIK/Special Contributor Thoth is the egalitarian downtown lounge. Unlike most nightclubs in the area, the tiny subterranean spot doesn't use a list. This means you can walk up and actually get in, assuming you're not wearing flip-flops and a T-shirt. There's also no cover.

Shimmy all night at the Shoppe
Photos by JASON JANIK/Special Contributor Before you hit the Lollipop Shoppe, you may want to brush up on your watusi. It's not anything vulgar. (Unless you want it to be.) The 1960s-era dance, comprising flailing arms and twisting hips, is similar to how visitors really get down at the Shoppe.

Take a dive into Ships
Photos by JASON JANIK/Special Contributor Ships Lounge is not the kind of place a proper young woman wants to be after dark: It's an old Lower Greenville dive with real, weathered drunks on barstools. And that's part of the charm. Added bonuses are $2.50 domestic beers and a jukebox stocked with vintage country and soul – Hank Williams, Eartha Kitt, the Drifters.

West End gets some sizzle, Mambo Cafe
Normally we're not in favor of a new chain coming to the West End. The Mambo Cafe gets a pass. The salsa club – located in touristy cities all over Mexico – opened in late July on Lamar Street, where Have a Nice Day Cafe used to be. It's the first U.S. location.
Opus oozes VIP vibe
Note to self: Do not walk up to Opus Lounge on a crowded Saturday night and say, "I'm on the list." . The bouncers will crush your bravado with one meaty hand. "There is no list," they will bark. "The end of the line is down there."

Ghostbar still a big hit
It's been a year since Ghostbar opened on the 33rd floor of the W Hotel. Some of the buzz has died, but it's still the glitziest nightclub in Dallas.
