DJ AM: Let's dance

08:10 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 18, 2007

DJ AM wants people to stop staring at him and dance. Please.

At his last Dallas show, at Ghostbar, folks crowded around the DJ booth and snapped photos.

DJ AM's a hit in the nightclubs, but he wishes it had only to do with the tracks he spins, not the starlets he's dated.

He did date Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore. But when people just stare, AM says, "I feel like, [expletive], am I not rocking it?"

The DJ – real name Adam Goldstein – hits up the Ghostbar again tonight, playing '80s, '90s and current music, "the best of every genre."

Here's more from him.

Lesley Téllez

Q: You've been to Dallas three times now. How does the crowd here compare to elsewhere?

A: Dallas is a lot of fun. It's tough, because I think specifically at Ghostbar, just because the way it's set up, there's not many speakers in front of the DJ booth. When any guest DJ comes from out of town, people probably want to see the DJ, and they end up going in front of the booth to watch. However, you're kind of away from being able to hear anything.

Q: Yeah, I went to your last show, and we were among the few people dancing in the back. So that's because of the set-up?

A: Yeah, I think it's the set-up. ... But I think that times are changing and people don't dance as much. In a mainstream bottle service-driven club, people do not dance as much. It's a fact. It's more about seeing and being seen. I think people sometimes forget that we're in a nightclub, and you're standing on a dance floor, and there's a DJ who's spent 15 years on making people dance.

Q: You played Phil Collins' "Can't Hurry Love" last time you were here. Is Phil officially back in again?

A: He never ever went, to me. Phil Collins has so many hits, and most people don't realize it. ... Someone like that, with that kind of songwriting strength, never really went anywhere. He's actually not officially back. I haven't played that since, and I feel bad. It's a great record.

Q: Who are you listening to now that you're excited about?

A: You know what, nothing really new new. Ever since I saw Daft Punk in Berkeley, then I went and saw them three times in two weeks ... I've been playing a lot of Daft Punk and listening to a lot of them. ... And also, it's strange, I haven't had a hip-hop album that I really like in awhile, but there's one I really like by this guy called Dirt Nasty. The whole record is incredible. Actually, Dirt Nasty is Simon Rex.

Q: The MTV guy?

A: Yep. His album is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. It's genius.
