Disc Debuts: 'Desktop Tower Defense' video game

08:21 AM CST on Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Defend your desktop: Usually, you get what you pay for. But the awesomely addictive PC title Desktop Tower Defense is a tremendous game for the eminently reasonable price of "free." This Flash-based title requires you to build a maze of cannons, air-to-air missile launchers and other defenses to hold off a swarm of "creeps" crawling across your screen. It's a simple concept that unfolds in finger-twisting complexity.

A maze of twisty little passages: There are a variety of enemies (normal, fast, flying, superstrong bosses and so forth) that are trying to crawl from one side of your screen to the other. If too many of them complete the journey, you lose. So you have to build a twisting corridor of gun towers to slow the so-called creeps as much as possible while you pour fire into their brainless bodies. Each enemy you kill yields a little cash that you can spend on towers. Do you want to build a forest of cheap-but-weak pellet towers? Or conserve your cash for expensive-but-thunderous dart towers? And don't forget the anti-aircraft guns for the flying-enemy levels.

Bottom line: Desktop Tower Defense is a quiet masterpiece of simplicity, a gaming haiku that rewards even the most amateur player.
