Slight delay on Dallas Mavericks' new coaching staff

The Mavericks finally got their man. Rick Carlisle reached an agreement in principle Friday night on a four-year contract to become the ninth Mavericks coach in franchise history, sources from both sides confirmed.

Any delay by the Dallas Mavericks drains a coaching candidate pool that isn't all that deep, writes NBA columnist David Moore. They must ask themselves if they can find a better coach for where they are right now than Carlisle. The answer is no.

Avery Johnson, fired as Dallas Mavericks coach Wednesday, has received numerous phone calls from NBA colleagues, including Golden State's Don Nelson, the former Mavericks coach who ran afoul of owner Mark Cuban after he handed the reins to Johnson in the 2004-05 season. "I just wanted to tell him he's a heck of a coach," Nelson said Friday.
