Sept. 4, 1978: Cowboys 38, Baltimore Colts 0

During the 1970s, the NFL preseason stretched into early September. The 1978 home opener was the earliest in Texas Stadium history at the time. The Cowboys, who were coming off a win in Super Bowl XII, faced an injury-plagued Colts team that had no chance on Monday Night Football .

Quarterback Roger Staubach celebrated his 13th wedding anniversary by completing 16 of 22 passes for 280 yards. He also threw touchdowns to four players before giving way to backup Danny White.

Key stat: The Cowboys had 583 total yards, the second-most in club history. They had 652 yards against Philadelphia in 1966.
