Annika Sorenstam to retire at end of season

Annika Sorenstam will retire after the season, ending an LPGA Tour career in which she has won 72 tournaments to date and delivered a defining moment when she teed it up against the men on the PGA Tour. Sorenstam, 37, has hinted at retirement the past several seasons, saying she wanted to devote more time to her growing business and to start a family.

Garcia wins The Players Championship in a playoff

Sergio Garcia ended the longest victory drought of his career Sunday by making a clutch par putt to force a playoff and hitting the island green 17th on the first extra hole to defeat Paul Goydos in The Players Championship.

Paul Goydos doesn't have a Q-rating, an endorsement deal or a top-30 finish in the last 16 months. What he does have for the first time in his career is a 54-hole lead – in The Players Championship, no less.

Youth is being served on the PGA Tour these days, writes Bill Nichols. Players under 30 have won eight of 18 events on the PGA Tour, including five of the last six. There were only seven under-30 winners in 47 events last year.

Now that Lorena Ochoa has established herself as the best women's golfer, everybody wants to compare her with Annika Sorenstam or Tiger Woods, both of whom - like Ochoa - have won four straight events during their careers. But Ochoa, writes DMN pro golf columnist Bill Nichols, doesn't need others to justify her accomplishments.
