FRISCO – The Dallas Stars' development camp is a way for young players to get a little understanding of the organization, and so far Tyler Beskorowany likes what he sees.

The Stars' top pick in the June draft (59th overall), Beskorowany is a goalie who has just been inducted into "Goalie U."

"They know what they're doing here," Beskorowany said Monday after completing his first practice at development camp. "It shows in a player like Mike Smith. It took a little bit more time, but he really evolved."

Beskorowany, 18, knows the process will take some time. Smith played his first NHL game at 24. Dan Ellis was 24. Tobias Stephan was 23 when he made his NHL debut last season and will move into the backup role this season.

The Dallas Stars' Tyler Beskorowany is working with other prospects at the team's development camp.

"I think you can look at Smith and Ellis as great examples," said Stars goalie consultant Andy Moog. "They both spent extra time in amateur, they both spent some time in the Coast [ECHL] and both played 100 to 120 games in the American League [AHL] before they got their chance."

Now, Smith is in contention to become the No. 1 goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Ellis signed a contract extension and is expected to be the No. 1 goalie for the Nashville Predators.

Smith and Ellis had to move on because Marty Turco, 32, has a hold of the Stars' No. 1 spot – and Turco waited a long time to get it. He played four years of college hockey and two years in the minors and became a backup at age 25. The prize is great for those with patience.

Stephan takes the next step in his progression this season, and Richard Bachman, 20, is pushing right behind. Bachman was a freshman at Colorado College last season and was one of the best goalies in the nation. Still, the Stars believe he needs more seasoning and will send him back to college for at least one more year.

"It's almost impossible to ask him to do more than he did last year, but that's what we'll do," Moog said of Bachman, who had a 25-9-1 record with a 1.85 GAA and .931 save percentage. "And it's not so much improve your numbers, but mature, learn, understand the game better."

Bachman already is proving a nice leader for Beskorowany at development camp.

"It's friendly competition," said Beskorowany, who will return to junior hockey for another year or two.

"What we've done is develop a plan that a goalie can look at and see that it works and then have the patience to see it through," Moog said. "Obviously, it starts by coming here and letting them see what the end result can be. I think that's really important."

The Dallas Stars have a history of taking their time to develop good goalies. Here are five that have made their way through the Dallas system:

Roman Turek: The big Czech backed up Ed Belfour and ended up posting a 159-115-43 NHL record with a 2.31 GAA.

Manny Fernandez: Served one season as Belfour's backup before moving onto Minnesota and Boston.

Marty Turco: Backed up Belfour before breaking most of his franchise goaltending records.

Dan Ellis: Lost battle with Mike Smith to be Turco's backup, but now is No.1 goalie in Nashville.

Mike Smith: After a season and a half as Turco's backup, is now in a battle to be Tampa Bay's starter.
