Dallas Cowboys' search for third QB starts with Bollinger

IRVING – The Cowboys aren't expected to sign another quarterback until next week. But they've already begun the interview process.

Former Minnesota quarterback Brooks Bollinger visited Valley Ranch for a workout this week. Bollinger, 28, is entering his sixth season and has a career 2-8 record as a starter.

Bollinger played seven games in the last two seasons with the Vikings. He started against the Cowboys in the preseason finale and completed six of 18 passes for 62 yards.

The Cowboys have also discussed Chris Simms, the former Texas quarterback who was cut by Tampa Bay. Simms, Todd Bouman and Joey Harrington all worked out for Baltimore on Monday. The Ravens settled on Bouman and signed him to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com.

If the Cowboys sign Bollinger this week, the team would have to pay his $605,000 base salary. That money is not guaranteed if Bollinger signs after Week 1.

No player is watching the Cowboys' quarterback news closer than Richard Bartel. The former third-stringer was released Saturday. He rejoined the Cowboys' practice squad Monday.

"I don't really care about that, bring them in," said Bartel, who may have less than a week to prove himself. "I'd love the opportunity to show them I can play at their level. I'm very motivated."

Oglesby cut: The Cowboys released cornerback Evan Oglesby on Tuesday so safety Keith Davis can join the 53-man roster. Davis is expected to practice with the team today.

By releasing Oglesby, the Cowboys are down to six corners on the roster. The Cowboys signed Oglesby off the waiver wire last September and he played in eight games, mostly on special teams.

Oglesby had a strong start in training camp this year but couldn't duplicate that success in the preseason games.

Spencer not ready: Outside linebacker Anthony Spencer got the staples taken out of his right knee Friday and hopes to start some running later this week.

Spencer underwent surgery to remove cartilage in the back of the kneecap on Aug. 20 and was expected to miss two to four weeks. Spencer said he's hoping to return next week.

Briefly: The Dec. 20 game against Baltimore on the NFL Network will be simulcast over the air on Ch. 33.
